What’s the issue?

Reliq freezes up when disconnecting or powering off an external USB device

How to reproduce

Connect external USB device
Confirm Reliq can operate
Disconnect or power off external device
Press play or any button on Reliq

Expected behavior:
Reliq can continue operating without the external device

Actual behavior:
Reliq locks up and has to be rebooted to operate

Rlx version: 1.1.13
Connected devices: Erae 1 + breakout

Hi @monospace0, thanks again for reporting this 🙏 Just a quick question: do you experience the same behavior when unplugging only the Erae (without turning it off)?

Yes it's the same behavior if I remove the USB cable from the Reliq or Erae

Hi, thank you very much for the answer 🙏 Unfortunately, I don’t have this particular MIDI device here to test. Could you let me know if the lock-up also happens when disconnecting other USB MIDI devices, or only with this one? Also, do you have any other USB devices connected to the same port when this issue occurs? Any extra details would be super helpful to help us narrow it down.

Hi.

I've tried it with 4 devices:

Erae 2 locks up Reliq
Erae 1 has the same behavior
McMillen K-Board Pro does not lock up Reliq
Novation LaunchPad X does not lock up Reliq

The only commonalitiy for the first two compared to the others, other than being of the same brand, is that both require a PSU to access full functionality. Erae 1 does not work at all without a PSU; Erae 2 has limited functionality without it, like no CV out.

Hey @monospace0, thanks a lot for the follow-up and detailed testing, super helpful as always!

Based on what you've shared, it seems the issue might be specific to how the Erae devices handle USB enumeration. We've tested other externally powered devices here (like the Osmose and MPC) without issues, so this could be a manufacturer-specific quirk.

We're already looking into it, but since we don’t currently have access to an Erae unit, it’s a bit challenging to reproduce reliably — we're working on a few ideas though. Really appreciate the clear info and your help tracking this down 🙂

Have you considered implementing some sort of "crash dump" logging ability so when Reliq crashes, we have a way of providing you details you could use to investigate the issue? It seems unlikely you will be able to acquire every USB device someone could plug into their Reliq, and this would allow you to get some info if there are problems.

Hi @brandroid , this is a great idea 🙌 You’re absolutely right — having better ways to capture crash data would help a lot. We already have some basic mechanisms in place (like the MIDI debug tools), but expanding this into a proper crash logging system is definitely part of our plans.

Kyriakos-Reliq if combined with wifi, you could basically have a button that auto sends the crash logs to you too
